2009 is Bemidji Lions 70th Anniversary
The Bemidji Lions Club was chartered April 25, 1939. The club will celebrate its 70th anniversary April 26 beginning with a social hour at 5:30 pm followed by a banquet at 6:30 pm at the Bemidji Eagles Aerie, 1270 Neilson Ave. SE. The speaker will be Henk-Jan Schuurman, CEO of Spring Point Project and professor at the Schulze Diabetes Institute at the University of Minnesota. The Spring Point Project is developing methods of transplanting pig islet cells as a cure for diabetes. All are invited to the celebration. Tickets cost $12. Please RSVP mmiron@bemidjipioneer.com.

Feb. 6 – 8, 2009 Lions 5M-10 Mid-Winter Convention in International Falls, MN
Attendees: Wayne Tieman, Bob Batchelder, Bob Sandbo, Jack Naastad
The convention was very informative and it was wonderful to talk with other Lions around the District. Conference highlights included several helpful Leadership seminars; a report on the continued development of designer pigs that will eventually lead to advancements in Diabetes research to make it possible to manage the disease without insulin treatments; and a Lion member spoke on his experiences learning how to use a Seeing Eye Dog and how the dogs must be re-trained as new physical situations develop in the world (i.e., dogs must learn how to guide through a traffic circle as opposed to a regular traffic intersection.)
The Bemidji Lions brought donations, totaling $4950.00, for various Lions charities: Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) ($500), MN Lions Eye Bank Inc.($350), Multiple District 5M Hearing Foundation ($350), American Diabetes Association ($500), Lions Quest Minnesota ($2500), Leader Dogs for the Blind ($500), and Hearing and Service Dogs-Minnesota ($250). Bemidji Lions are thanked for their generous support.

The Bemidji Lions collect all donated eye glasses and prepare them for shipment. Most of these glasses are shipped for distribution outside of the United States through Lions International
